Adam Coupe Photography Heathrow T5 3 Royal Ascot 7  Eden Project 3 38 Finsbury Square

The commerical photography displayed on this site illustrates how established we are in the architectural photography and construction photography fields.  We work with architects, developers, main contractors and construction product manufacturers who require both stage photography and completed project images.

Commercial photography is however a broad discipline and essentially covers B2B and B2C imagery for all marketing activity irrespective of sector.  We work with a wide range of organisations from DEFRA funded government awareness organisations, looking to raise awareness of environmental issues through to partnerships and SOHO businesses in a wide range of sectors.  All have the same requirement - great images delivered on time, on brief and on budget.

We work on location or make use of great, modern studio facilities located in rolling farmland in Berkshire - and unlike most studios, customers actually enjoy going there!

Commercial Photography can involve creating stunning images of what customers sometimes describe as 'clever but dull looking products' with the use of unusual angles, colour and lighting - often best done in studio.  Some products are simply too unwieldy to transport to us or are at their most impressive when installed and this is where we travel throughout the UK to customer premises or other locations.

Commercial Photography also involves people.  Photographing people generally takes one of two routes - involving your own staff or involving models.  We often photograph customer staff, often for annual reports, corporate literature, spokespeople images for PR activity and projecting the 'face' of the organisation for web and intranet activity.  Illustrating solutions, brand values or the ethos of the organisation can often be achieved using your own staff.  Alternatively we have contacts with model agencies in your area that can supply local models to minimise costs.  Most model agencies now have online selection facilities so we can discuss the look that you are trying to achieve and shortlist online with minimum disruption.

We regularly work with advertising and PR agencies and we are often introduced to new agencies by clients who like what they see on this site and then ask their agency to involve us in a project.

Featured Commercial Construction Projects

Heathrow Terminal 5

Heathrow T5 4        Heathrow T5 1         Heathrow T5 9         Heathrow T5 10

These Heathrow Terminal 5 images were taken just before the building opened and final baggage handling system checking and training was taking place in the main concourse - we will all remember the headlines involving the system for the period following launch.  There are stunning structural elements and an impressive attention to detail providing plenty of opportunity for commercial photography.  Spot the few remaining construction workers doing final snagging at the coffee shop in the shot below.

Royal Ascot, Berkshire

Royal Ascot 2        Royal Ascot 8         Royal Ascot 7          Royal Ascot 1

This was a sweltering mid summer day with an amazing azure sky and strong contrasty lighting.  Apparently Ascot racecourse is used for only 30 days per year when the grandstand and restaurants heave with visitors.  Marvellous use of colour in the huge open atrium spaces make this building fresh and inviting.

The Core, Eden Project, Cornwall

Eden Project 2        Eden Project         Eden Project 3        Eden Project 9

The Core almost shocks by the way in which it defies expectations - outwardly bursting timber walls, light catching roof spikes, copper roofing all contribute to an impression of thistle influences - stunning opportunities for commercial photography.  The timber roof uses a similar, though more intricate gridshell structure to that used on the Savill Garden Building.

Savill Garden Building, Savill Gardens, Windsor

Savill Building 1        Savill Building 4         Savill Building 6        Savill Building 5

The undulating, oak clad timber roof installed on the Savill Garden Building drags your attention away from the surrounding planting to stop, stare and wonder.  The entrance with the full height glazing and funneling walls draw the eye through the structure to the gardens beyond and then up to the central dome of the wave form roof - a dream of a building for commercial photography. The upwardly arched end overhangs illustrate the construction method and strong gridshell structure of the underside.

Commercial Photography - How we work

Eden Project No. 1 Nottingham Science Park  NFU Headquarters Royal Ascot Heathrow Terminal 5

The projects featured provide examples of the quality and variety of images that customers receive as part of our commercial photography service.

We provide images in digital formats to suit -your- requirements, typically 'print ready' at 300dpi in either TIFF or Photoshop psd formats. However if you want JPEGs of your commercial photography then that's OK with us. We provide your images on DVD and will quote for any additional image enhancement or processing work that you may require.

We can sometimes fit in work at only a few days notice. Our aim is to accomodate your requirements and provide commercial photography that fits in with your plans and timescales.

Preparation is key to creating the best possible commercial photography images.  The more information we have beforehand, the better.

What you need to tell us:

• The location of the site requiring commercial photography.

• The function of building for which commercial photography is required.

• Areas to be considered or emphasised for your commercial photography.

• Are there any key features to highlight within your commercial photography – or issues for the photographer

   to downplay or work around?

• What is the purpose of the commercial photography – how are the images to be

reproduced, eg, for display, publication, web use or all three?

• Supplied form of images required from your commercial photography, eg, DVD, colour hard copy contact sheets, prints.

• The delivery deadline for your commercial photography images. A longer deadline can give us more scope to shoot in

   better weather

• Is the building in use/under construction/about to be handed over or completed and occupied?

• Are there any unusual construction materials or techniques used in the structure and have interior designers been

involved in designing sophisticated lighting installations that should be captured sympathetically within the building.

Building Access

• Are the building owners and occupiers expecting commercial photography to be undertaken on their premises so that

  they can inform their staff?

• Are they aware of what commercial photography involves? – for  example doing it properly involves using a

tripod, maybe lights, taking some time, etc?

• Are there convenient areas for parking available?

• Are the areas or rooms for commercial photography accessible? – are there any keys or security

codes involved or last minute snagging required

• Can the lighting in priority areas be adjusted for dusk or dawn commercial photography?

• Are there any special security clearance required before commercial photography can take place?

• If commercial photography from a neighbouring building is required, has the necessary permission been obtained?

38 Finsbury Square Eden Project Heathrow Terminal 5 No. 1 Nottingham Science Park  Royal Ascot

Site conditions - is the building looking its best?

• Has all the construction work been completed?

• Has all construction signage been removed?

• Are there any skips, scaffolding or portaloos left behind?

• Has the landscaping been completed? Has litter been picked up?

• Are the windows and cladding clean and free from concrete splatter or dust?

• Any lights out? Have any been replaced with the wrong colour?

• Are interior spaces clean?

• Has all the new furniture been installed?

• Flowers and plants available for inclusion in shots?

Other Issues to Consider

• The old adage that ‘good light makes good commercial photography’ when applied

to buildings can usually be interpreted as good weather makes good

commercial photography. So if you can put some latitude into the deadline, this

will increase the likelihood that I can make my visit on a sunny day.

• Time of the year – the angle of the sun and shadows cast by neighbouring buildings will effect your construction

   photography images.

• The season – leaves on the trees, plants in flower, snow on the ground  – and most importantly,

Christmas or other seasonal decorations.  Seasonal aspects will limit the flexibility of your commercial photography images

• Day of the week – would a weekend shoot be preferable?

• Time of day – would a night or dusk shot work best.

Insurance

• We have public and products liability cover valued at £2 million.

Fees

• Having negotiated the fee for the commission, will your accounts department require a purchase order number on the

  invoice to facilitate payment?

We hope these notes will help you in preparing for commercial photography.  It's always clear when a client has spent time thinking and planning what needs to be captured.  It often helps if shoot planning is approached as a series of 'stories' or messages.  It may be that a project has a strong 'green' message, a strong 'innovation' message and a strong 'affordability' message.  This approach results in a focus for the photographer to emphasise during the shoot.
