The Blue Cube Building, a flexible performing arts space, illustrated in the commercial photography and architectural photography, was designed by students as part of the 'joinedupdesignforschools' initiative run by the charity the Sorrell Foundation. This unique initiative joins 'client teams' of pupils from the schools involved, with the UK's leading design practices to provide solutions for practical improvements in schools.
The Mounts Bay students worked with architect Phin Manasseh to draw up the design shown in the architectural photography, and then helped to secure some of the £650,000 funding by presenting their ideas to Government Ministers at Westminster and to local Councillors and school Governors. The building has been constructed by builders J and E Regan.
The opening ceremony, which was attended by more than 100 guests, including representatives of the Sorrell Foundation, was designed as a celebration of the project and the involvement of students.
Headteacher Sara Davey said "The new building will help to transform learning at Mounts Bay School. With our new Applied Learning status we are developing new and exciting learning opportunities for all students. Leading the way is the new Creative and Media Diploma which will be based in the Blue Cube."
The Blue Cube was shortlisted for the BCSE Industry Awards 2008
