IKEA Southampton, the first UK IKEA built in a city centre and the Swedish furniture giant’s 254th store worldwide with 32,000 square metres of retail space and 20,000 customers a day.

IKEA has found the Southampton IKEA to be an important testing ground logistically due to the location in the center of an urban area illustrated in the commercial photography.

A 90 foot high tensile structure has been installed to shelter IKEA customers as they enter and exit the store from the adjacent multi-storey car park.

Measuring 14m wide by 72m long, with a surface area of 1120m2, the tensile fabric structure protects the high level entrance to the store from the multi-storey car park illustrated in the commercial photography and architectural photography. A 45m long and 19m wide void between the car park and main building houses a series of travellators, taking shoppers from the checkouts at ground level up to each level of the car park.

Drainage of rainwater was a key design element. The offset wave profile, with the front profile 90 degrees out of phase with the back, allowed far more efficient control of rainwater run-off to the internal guttering system. The perimeter and cross-bracing structural framework was constructed from steel sections that could be utilised as both a guttering and tensioning system for the fabric membrane shown in the commercial photography above.
